WEAPONS
The Academy training covers a wide variety of weapons including the following:
  • Cutlass
  • Broadsword (hand and a half style)
  • Quarterstaff
  • Sword and Buckler
  • Rapier and Dagger (single Rapier, Rapier and Cloak, etc.)
  • Classical Smallword
  • Hollywood Swashbuckling (Vaudeville Sabre)
  • Hand to Hand Fighting (Unarmed Combat, Rolls and Falls)

The Academy also teaches variations on these as well as other weapons and styles used in film and stage production, such as Double Rapier, Whip Cracking, Knife Fighting, and much more. If the Academy does not regularly teach a weapon or style you are looking for, ask us. We may be able to direct you to someone who can.

CLASSES AT THE ACADEMY - Photos!

INTRO SEMINAR
Every one who wishes to train at the Academy needs to attend an Introductory Seminar. The seminars are 4 hours long and covers sword parries and cuts for the Cutlass, Broadsword and Quarterstaff. Seminars are given every 2-3 months.

FIGHT CLASS!
The Academy's Professional Training Program functions on a month to month basis. Class meets twice a week and class fee is $125 a month. All weapons are provided.

The BASIC LEVEL: FUNDAMENTALS - This level covers safety and the primary techniques of Hand to Hand Combat, Broadsword, Quarterstaff, Theatrical Sabre and Cutlass. All students must master the 3 basic drills and the basic fight for each of these weapons.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: APPLICATIONS - This level continues training in weapons safety. Techniques advance to Double Cutlass, Single Rapier and Rapier and Dagger. All students must master the drills for each technique and the basic fight with each weapon. Students' performances are regularly taped for review on screen.

The ADVANCED LEVEL begins with an in depth study of the French Classical Smallsword and continues as a PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP FOR FILM COMBAT. Students at this level train in the weapons that are used most frequently in the movie industry. Emphasis is on bringing new choreography to performance level quickly, performing it for camera and receiving feedback from the swordmasters.

All new students to the Academy must complete the Basics and Intermediate Levels unless they are accepted by audition (see below).


COMBAT SEMINARS
The Academy periodically offers 1 day seminars which are crash courses in combat for film. These seminars are led by Dan Speaker and Jan Bryant using techniques they have developed preparing actors for roles in the features FARSIDE OF THE WORLD, HIDALGO and THREE MUSKETEERS, the series THE NEW ADVENTURES OF ROBINHOOD and other productions. They cover broadsword and theatrical sabre with some quarterstaff and hand to hand.
